You Asked for It: Machine Shed Cole Slaw Recipe!

We’ve noticed you’ve been searching for the famous Machine Shed Coleslaw recipe on our blog, so here it is!

Here’s a little history behind this summertime cookout staple:

Many culinary experts and historians believe that coleslaw has been consumed, in its most basic form, since Roman times.

However, modern coleslaw, which is made with mayonnaise, could not have been developed until the 18th century, when mayonnaise was created.

In its simplest form, coleslaw is a white cabbage salad. Other fruits and vegetables such as apples, pineapples, red cabbage, and carrots may also be added to the salad.

Once the vegetables have been shredded, a tart dressing made of oil and vinegar is added.

Here is a classic summertime side that’s easy to make!

Machine Shed Cole Slaw

12 cups (1 1/2 –  16 ounce packages) shredded cabbage with carrot (coleslaw mix)

1 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon celery seeds

1. Place cabbage with carrot in a very large bowl. Set aside.

2. In a medium bowl stir together mayonnaise, sugar and celery seeds. Add to cabbage mixture and toss to coat.

3. Cover and chill up to 4 hours. Makes 8 servings.

Enjoy!

I always have to make sure I take the time to eat at the Machine Shed in Davenport when I visit relatives back home and get too full to eat dessert, so I always get a slice of the cocoanut cream pie to go. I order it with my meal so they don’t sell out of it

Ate at the Davenport Machine Shed for the first time a few weeks ago and had the coleslaw. Delicious! Tasted so much like my grandmother’s. She used vinegar, so I was surprised to see your recipe does not call for it. Also, I thought I saw green peppers in your coleslaw. Was I imagining things?

    • We do not use green peppers or vinegar. Hope you enjoy making it at home!

This is the best coleslaw! Not only do we come to the restaurant frequently but, I make the coleslaw for family functions too. It always goes over well and I have given out the recipe multiple times. Other restaurant recipes are welcomed by our family.
